Abstract:
Research in India and on an international level has shown a clear correlation between socio economic status and academic achievement. It is the most influential factor in determining academic achievement among children, and their access to quality education in the country. Although there has been legislation to this effect and reservation policy, the rationale and enforcement mechanisms are unclear, often leading the benefits not in fact reaching those of a lower socioeconomic status. This paper will examine theories of academic achievement and studies conducted on the relationship between socio economic status and performance. The paper will then pose policy recommendations in order for the government to adequately address the needs of students from lower socioeconomic backgrounds.
