ABSTRACT:
The second half of eighteenth century in Manipur is characterized by political turmoil both internal and external. Succession rivalry and recurrent Burmese raids were a common feature of this period. Coinciding mostly with the reign of Bhagyachandra, the period witnessed an expansive Burma commonly known to the Manipuri as Ava from the east. An equally expanding British empire was taking shape in the western part of Manipur. It was between these two imperial entities viz. Burmese empire and the British empire that Manipur negotiated its way during this period. An attempt is being made in this article to situate the social and political changes in Manipurin the latter half of eighteenth century in light of the larger developments that are taking shape across the frontier.
